Having an internet presence is crucial for the Home-based Independent Contractor.

I have been involved with the travel industry a very short time and during this short period of time, the changes throughout the industry have been dramatic. As many of you, have watched the travel agency aspect of the industry evolve from "Brick and Mortars" and "storefronts" to home based and Internet based businesses. We have witnessed more and more travel agents becoming Independent Contractors, we have seen the evolution of technology, primarily in the form of consumer websites that cater to all types of travel. Just do a search in Google and all sorts of offers and opportunities present themselves.

How important is it to the independent agent to have a web presence at this time?

Extremely! It has proven to many to be an invaluable tool in promoting ones business, and attracting new clients, all-the-while, enhancing the service that an independent contractor provides to the client, allowing the agent to be more profitable and efficient. Consumers are researching purchases on-line including books, music, gifts, flowers and travel. Today's travel professional needs to consider the Internet as an additional opportunity to communicate with prospective customers, and aspire to turning them into clients.

Nothing can compare to the level of customer service an agent provides to the consumer. Having the right tools assists and enhances that customer service, making the agent much more competitive with the Travelocities and Expedias. Many agents have several different websites that cater to different niche services which is an absolute must.

For the agent that is not so technology-minded, there are products offered that are very user friendly and semi customizable, with minimum maintenance involved. Most have databases that will capture potential client's information so the agent may follow through, providing that ever-important customer service!

Quite a few even having booking engines that will allow the prospective client to research and even book the travel right from the website. All of which is invaluable for the independent contractor to better grow their business and to remain competitive in this wonderful, ever changing industry.

So, in conclusion, should you have a consumer website, regardless of the type of travel you sell, ABSOLUTELY!!!
